Okay thanks, so Thunderbird and KMail use identities, possibly other
email clients as well.

Even though I use a 'workaround' for CM not having an identity function
by adding accounts, there are still instances where I have to either
manually enter the "From:" details.  So the workaround is not perfect.

From memory, in KMail, an identity was similar to a local alias. It
was connected to an account, so one could have many identities and only
have to setup a few accounts. It worked well, on replies, forwarding,
etc.
