Well, you might just as easily say identities are a workaround for not having
an SMTP-only-account function! Even with identities it might be the case
where you have to manually enter the From: details, having not set up the
alias you want.

SMTP-only accounts are a more powerful form of identities. They allow to set
different options for your identity, for example a different signature, a
different Reply-To, a different GPG key, and any other option.
This might be overkill for you, you might want everything the same apart from
the From header. I can see where the simplicity of just creating a list of
email addresses might be wanted. But it is also simple to create one SMTP-only
account and then copy this as many times as you need, changing just the email
address each time. You can use the 'auto-account-selection' options with
these, so mostly you won't even have to manually choose the account you need.
OTOH, by all means, create a feature request for identities.
