It's a feature in X.11. X.11 does not copy the actually selected text
but merely saves a reference to the selected text so if you close the
program or skip the selection the reference points to an empty string.

To use a persisted text selection your best option is Ctrl+c, Ctrl+v
since this uses the clipboard manager instead of the built-in feature
of X.11.
