openSUSE's community system is very well organized. They use vBulletin
for discussions which sends notifications only for the thread which one
subscribes to. There is also NNTP for those who want to receive all
updates for all forum threads. And their bugzilla sends you
notifications only if you are in the CC list of the particular bug.
And they use SSL for these systems.

IMO it should be the job of the machines to filter data and deliver
securely to us only what we have requested, not the other way around.
