[Users] IMAP4 with university Gmail account

That did it! I looked all over for an option like that but couldn't
find it. Having told me I could do it I looked again, and finally found
out how - right click on the folder, select properties, untick the 'Scan
for new mail' box.

I think I'm too old to ever understand most of Gmail. :(
