I had this problem with Claws in general, not just when composing.  I
solved it by tweaking my gtk theme settings in ~/.gtkrc-2.0, to make the
highlight color lighter and thus contrast better with the black focus
outline.  I did it globally (for all programs), but I believe there is a
way to restrict this to windows of a particular class.

Hope I'm not too far off the mark :-)
