Hi, 

I used to use Claws Mail under Ubuntu Gnome. 
I then switched to LinuxMint KDE, and, as many others, had experience nightmares with KMail, which
drove me back to Claws Mail. Having a 2-years old graphic card (seems to be dinosaure ages...), I
basically cannot run KDE... which is a pain, cause I really liked the high configuration
flexibility. 
I now have LinuxMint 9 running with XFCE, and Claws Mail as my favorite email client. 

From my experience, I never had any issue with Claws under none of the environments I tried.
