/me is very happy user of Archlinux since '07 (using Gentoo >5yrs before
that) along with Xfce.

I consider it kind of sweet-spot between Gentoo & Ubuntu - there are
binary packages, it's rolling distro (no pain with the upgrade),  decent
package manager (pacman), clean & simple config files/init scripts and
it's very easy to build & intalle from the source.
