It always makes me wonder why getting reasonably recent packages for
Ubuntu (and other Debian-based distros) is so difficult, there used to
be PPAs quite some time ago but they seem to have gone out of fashion
somehow.

As a Fedora user I have been building my own packages based on git
pulls for many years, fundamentally once I learned how to set up the
necessary tools and directory structure to do the builds it was fairly
straightforward (with a few issues along the way, usually fixed by
Googling or seeing what Paul said). It's pretty good, not perfect, but
quite close.

Is there a good FAQ for learning to build and package on Debian-based
systems? As someone who rarely does anything on such distros I've not
looked around but it sounds like it would really help people learn how
to scratch their own itch.
