I renamed away my .claws-mail and Mail directories and ran it again to
get the setup dialogue.

The same problem happened!  I hadn't noticed it when I set it up.

I was running a Claws Mail snap for Ubuntu 24.04 called
claws-mail-moon127.

I found a standard Debian package installation and installed that on
top.  It now works!

As it is a trouble-shooting scenario, a first step I propose is to
create a new user account and test whether input works with that one.

I understand you want a quick solution, and perhaps there is one, but
figuring out what's wrong and whether it can be fixed might take more
time than reconfiguring your Claws Mail accounts from scratch. The size
of the clawsrc file doesn't tell anything about how many settings you've
changed. It's an INI-style file with lots of variable definitions.

Also see whether anything suspicious turns up when running "claws-mail -d"
in a terminal.
