Sorted!
The address books are held in a file called addrbook--index.xml, and it
was this that contained a couple of blank address books. However, I
found another file sitting next to it in the same directory called
addrbook--index.backup.xml containing all my addresses. So it was
simple case of renaming and restarting Claws Mail.
I've been wondering what happened to cause this glitch, and the only
thing I can think of is my attempt to search for an email from a
friend. Her email was automatically put into a certain folder because
of the address book her address is held in. So I know the address
books were okay when her email was received.
For various reasons I wanted her email filed in another folder, so I
dragged it and accidentally dropped it in the wrong folder. But I
didn't know which wrong folder, so I attempted, unsuccessfully, to get
Claws Mail to search for it.
I think it was my ham-fisted attempts to get Claws Mail to do a search
across multiple folders that might have caused the problem. Whatever it
was, I think there's a bug there somewhere.
I eventually found the email manually, btw,
