There are backwards incompatible changes, as indicated by the manual
downgrade.

But you can switch between 3.18.0 and 4.0.0 and back again because there
are no incompatible changes between 3.18.0 (or greater in the 3.x.x
releases) and 4.0.0 (or greater in the 4.x.x releases).

The backwards incompatible changes do not directly correspond to 3.x.x versus
4.x.x.
