I've had this problem with XFCE...cycling through different 'themes'
to get some improvement, and was about to ask about this when this 
thread popped up. So, thanks!

Perhaps too "old-school", but I was expecting that an entry in
".Xdefaults" was how to adjust colors for claws-mail (and only 
claws-mail), but had not yet reached the level of frustration
needed to go searching through the code.
