The above is the default list Google presents you with, but it's necessary to add

"Gmail API, https://mail.google.com/, Read, compose, send and permanently delete all your
email from Gmail"

to their list - it is one of the options.

This is detailed in Claws OAuth2 wiki under "Scope Settings":
https://www.claws-mail.org/faq/index.php/Oauth2

Click on 'Add or Remove Scopes'.

Select (check the box) this entry: "Gmail API, https://mail.google.com/, Read, compose,
send and permanently delete all your email from Gmail"

(Note that the list is in alphabetical order and you may need to go to a later page
to find this entry. Also, if you can't find it in the list, you can enter the URL
manually at the bottom of the page to add it to the list.)
[endquote]

When it shows you the updated list, continue to the next page ofthe list, as your
addition will be one of the options added towards the end.

And, BTW, you're not alone in finding this is a nightmare to set up!

And to some extent, documenting how to do it can be equally as taxing! <G!>

Kind Regards,
