I just typed some value in as an example (not copy&paste) since i wanted to demonstrate the principle: That existing theme variables can be used in the custom css too. What SteveT already did. It's rather convenient.

Please note the 'breeze' at the end of this variable name. It works only for that theme.

I looked it up but something like  "theme_bg_color_adwaita" does not exist in Adwaita; and to me it also looks like they have a very different css in general - the selectors, the structure.

(My humble impression, but as a clear outsider, is, that gtk-3 might be a total mess .... like, eveyone is doing everything their own way. Naturally, developers would have no choice than to adapt their app to one specific theme and better not know how it works out for others. And i guess everyone is pushing the responsibility to someone else and in the end, no one is in a position to implement standards. But, i probably just don't understand how gtk works.)
