After uopdate to 4.0.0 i have the same problem. Previosly, all backgrounds (folder list, message list, message view, perferences) were whitish, now all are dark.

I have to mention that since some time, i've no more any 'gnome-settings-daemon' or any of this kind running, because i finally found them obsolete for me, because i was running so many third party apps which anyway did not get their look&feel from the desktop daemon. But i used some gnome-confuigurator to set up the theme and colors at least for gnome-apps and that always had worked even w/o these daemons.

I looked up the claws Prefs Display ->C olors -> Others -> message background settings which always had been activated fro me and still won't change the bg now.

There is the file ~/.gtk-2.0-mine which in the past wasc used for user customizations on this machine. Now there is also ~/.config/gtk-2.0 with these files, and /.config/gtk-3.0 folder with gtk.css. This file has a bright background configured though, and i guess it's still the gtk-2.0 which is used for claws.

gtk-2-0-mine has:

gtk-color-scheme="tooltip_fg_color:#000000\nbase_color:#ffffe0bf16fb\nselected_fg_color:#000000000000\ntext_color:#1A1A1A\nbg_color:#ccffff8e8e\ntooltip_bg_color:#ffffff6959d2\nselected_bg_color:#c285ffff4f28\nfg_color:#000000\n"

and as you can see, there are screwed RGB hex color codes (it should be 3 byte like bf16fb but are 6, or am i wrong?) and i don't know when that happened.

I tried this: I the ~/.config/gtk-2.0 folder, corrected the values and set them to a bright bg and dark fg, and replaced the counterpart files in my home folder symllinks.

(I believe one of both locations must be obsolete now and i think it's the ~/ files. But since i've no desktop daemons running i should keep things as they were, for now.)

But it still dosenot work for claws. It always worked and still works for libreoffice and text editor geany and my terminal tilix.

Since i am left clueless where i should confiigure things in these days and age, i will install some gnome desktop configurator next and see what happens ....
