Yes! I see it now.  Duh.  That was clumsy of me, wasn't it?  Psigh!

Actually I installed libwebkit2gtk-4.0-dev as suggested by Ralf Maldorf,
and that worked fine.

I now have claws-mail working completely to my satisfaction.
