That depends on whether the option "'Get Mail' checks for new messages on
this account" is checked. This same option is controlled by the 'G' column in
the 'edit accounts' window.

You can still check for new mail when this option is turned off, by selecting
a folder, e.g. the inbox, in your imap mailbox.
