Yes, their WebView2
(https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/hosting/webview2)
seems kind of promising, once they release a standalone runtime, but
you'll notice that it is basically a bundled Chromium engine.

It would be better to simply skip the Microsoft "middle man" and write a
plugin using Chromium Embedded Framework, which would be usable on all
the operating systems.
