Too funny, since the OP mentioned Thunderbird and I mentioned
Evolution (the GNOME MUA) as examples for a cleaner user interface
layout. Thunderbird as well as Evolution chose a layout that
is different to Claws. The issue isn't caused by visible or invisible
separating lines. The way the widgets are arranged for the Claws GUI is
unusual, it not necessarily does confuse users, but it contains a
little risk to confuse. Thunderbird and Evolution don't need visible
separating lines, due to (at least regarding this aspect) a cleaner
layout of their GUIs.

You don't try to understand the OP. Without doubts the OP is able to
stand this inconvenience. Since rearranging of some GUI elements is
possible by almost all MUAs, by Claws, too, the OP asked if there is a
way to change this handle "issue", too (by a Claws settings dialogue,
not by editing the source code).
