Let's start with the easy stuff;

To see if spell checking is (or isn't) even possible, look at Help menu,
About then Features.  Enchant should be ticked.

If Enchant is _not_ marked, then install the enchant package through
your package manager.  Probably restart Claws.

If Enchant is enabled, then shutting Claws down and starting it from the
command line with --debug might shed some light as to what's missing.
