It is not specific to the desktop environment.

Meanwhile, I've had it once with GNOME Shell (on Wayland) and Fedora 33.
It happened during IMAP access of the "All Mail" folder, while Claws Mail
was busy opening the folder, showing the message count in the bottom right
corner, and long before message view. GDB only showed code activity within
GTK/Pango. I've tried to reproduce it with the mails fetched via POP3, but
that hasn't lead to a reproducer.
