Despite your suspicions, yes, it's possible.

Use the Quick Search feature.

Go to the top-level mailbox folder.

Click the magnifying glass icon between message list and message view (or
/Edit/Quick search).

Click on the selector to expand it, and check the box 'Recursive'.

Enter your search terms and press the Enter key.

A recursive search will then be performed.

Folders which have matching messages will have the their folder icon (in the
folder view) changed to a magnifying glass.
