That's not the case on my system. Purely in gedit, select text, move
somewhere else and mid-click-paste works as you'd expect. Then
left-click elsewhere in the text, go to yet another place and
mid-click-paste works exactly as before. Obviously if I select some
different text (click and extend) then that replaces the selection. But
simply clicking somewhere else doesn't deselect though it does remove
the highlight. This is gedit 3.22.1.

FWIW, lxterm behaves the same. I've no idea what toolkit that uses.
