I'm trying to use socks5 for smtp, with authentication (and without, no change)
and am getting the following errors:

while connected to VPN:
* Account 'Account1': Connecting to SMTP server: smtp.mailgun.org:465...
*** write on fd-1: Bad file descriptor

without VPN:
* Account 'Account1': Connecting to SMTP server: smtp.mailgun.org:465...
*** Socket IO timeout.

I can send fine with the proxy off. I don't know if receiving works with the
proxy, as this is a send-only account.
