Just to clarify: You hit the "Clear" button between such attempts? I
don't want the type to be reset unless "Clear" has been clicked.

No, because the problem -- and I have probably not made this clear
earlier -- is not when I do consecutive searches. It's when I do a
search, clear it, work for a while with no search, then go to search
again, to find that the search term I'm inserting is completely
mis-interpreted because search mode was left the way it was for my last
search, which was not even done through the search pane. I usually
don't realize I'm in the wrong mode until the search fails and the
textbox turns red.
