To find messages you can use quick filter rules, e.g.

to_or_cc matchcase "some at mailing-list.com" & watch_thread

If you quick filter recursively (check box "Recursive"
in Extended quick filter drop down) having selected the
top folder, you will be able to see an icon next to
each folder which contains messages matching the filter
rule. Then if you click on such folder you will see
the particular messages.
