Weird. Never happened to me (neither with openSUSE's
build, nor with mine).

The only time I have experienced extreme slowness is
when connecting to Yahoo IMAP account (but it is Yahoo
to blame, their IMAP is terribly slow).

Have you tried looking at network log on startup? Or
probably starting in offline mode? (bear in mind bug
4048 which may not be fixed in openSUSE's version)
