Did you do a complete shutdown or just sleep/hibernate?

I've had problems like this after waking a desktop up from sleep.
Something got corrupted in the cache. A complete shutdown and reboot
would fix it or I've also had success by just quitting all my running
programs and then doing the following from a terminal:

sudo sh -c "sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches"

If you have already tried a clean boot disregard this...
