Yes, I observed that as well (in my message
<20161009190858.7f8dfe31.psychonaut at nothingisreal.com>).  I suppose the
problem is that Claws Mail inserts a newline after the separator even
when the separator is zero-length.  This results in a total of three
newlines (two before the separator and one after).  If you use a
separator, then this behaviour is fine, but if you don't, you get a
superfluous blank line.
