The reason for me was that I'm using Claws build from git, too, Ubuntu
16.04.1, too and POP accounts, too, but I do _not_ experience those
issues, too. So my guess was, that the culprit _could_ be related to a
mistake, when building Claws.

Indeed, I'm not using Unity and I'm not using gmail, but the OP didn't
mention it by the original post, but even if it would have been
mentioned, I still might have guessed, that the culprit _could_ have
been a mistake when building Claws.

I didn't know that it has nothing to do with building Claws. That the
download issue has to do with the provider was my guess, too, but I
OTOH couldn't think of a reason that a desktop environment has got
impact to the functionality of Claws, now I can. Does Unity cause any
other issues when using Claws?
