Neil,

Unless you've turned on the hidden pref 'live_dangerously', you will
get a confirmation dialogue before deleting a mail. 'move to trash'
does not have this confirmation.

The easiest way for you to determine the behaviour is not for me to
attempt to explain the intricacies, but for you to just test it
yourself by, for example, making a test folder, copying some msgs
there, and then deleting or moving to trash.

There's another option to bear in mind: '/View/Hide deleted messages'
