Just checked my GMAIL config and I was able to send a message to another
email account...

So, please find below the relevant part of my config :
Account > Basic > Server information
  Protocol : IMAP4
  Server for receiving : imap.gmail.com
  SMTP server (send) : smtp.gmail.com
User ID : (my login) Password : (my password)

Account > Send
  x SMTP Authentication (SMTP AUTH)
    Authentication method : Automatic
User ID : (my login) Password : (my password)

Account > SSL
  IMAP4
o Use SSL for IMAP4 connection
  Send (SMTP)
o Use SSL for SMTP connection

  x Use non-blocking SSL

Hope this helps,
Paul
