Seems ok to me though I don't have as much mail as you. You could try
using folders to reduce the number in the INBOX or folders you click on
most. I also put the imap cache folder on a ram disk for security
reasons really and perhaps that speeds it up for me too? 

It won't help much with filtering on a slow connection though if you
get loads every day.
