Hiya
when you made the setting change in gmail did you save it before
logging out.  up in the top left hand side of the pane.

You can check this by access the pop server,CLI,  try telneting <ip
address? 995. login as <user> and see what happens
If you have disabled pop you get no response if it still active you
will get an authentication error.
