I've a configuration that is :
 - Kernel 3.2.0,
 - KDE
 - Claws 3.8.0
 - Onboard i9xx Intel chipset.
and I noticed no slow down when I upgraded my kernel (and I'm running new
kernels when they become avail., so I've been thru all the 3.x series).

So, unless we can relate kernel version to an nVidia kernel driver, I doubt
kernel (as delivered by ftp.kernel.org) is involved.
