  Well, that page is basically stating that the Mate project is a gnome2 fork,
a non-intuitive non-appealing desktop for users :)
  Oh, and with a funny project philosophy based on mate's ritual (!), a
traditional infused drink consumed in South America mainly, see

  Unfortunately seems to be a one-man effort (as nobody else is committing on
the github repo), which it's probably not much given the size of gnome2.
