Bingo! That worked.  As Paul's advice always does!

I managed to mess things up initially, by *not* closing my edit of
clawsrc before restarting claws-mail.  (I *saved* the file, but did not
close the editor.)  I finally noticed, when the tweak didn't work, that
mainwin_menubar=1 had been changed back to mainwin_menubar=0!  I
re-tweakee, *closed* the editor, re-started claws-mail, and all was
well.
