[Users] Typing disabled

First, apologies.  I'm doing something naughty.  But please understand
my situation!  I'm fighting to recover from a system disaster which has
resulted in the loss of my root folder, but not my home folder which is
on another partition.

So the naughty thing is installing Claws mail afresh, in a version that
may or may not be the old one.  And using the old .claws-mail config
dir.

It's working as far as I can see, with one glaring exception.  When I
compose a mail, or in fact use any input form, I can put the cursor into
any of the input fields, but nothing happens when I type. I can click on
buttons successfully and can e.g. reply to mails (but with no reply text
obviously).

I could in theory recreate the config from scratch, but my clawsrc
matcherrc and accountrc files are all over 11KB.  So if anyone can give
some ideas to narrow it down that would be great.  Or point me to any
relevant posts (I haven't found any).

I don't think it can be a permissions issue.  Everything is owned by my
normal user.
