Have a look at the 'Hidden Preferences' section in the manual, specifically
the 'two_line_vertical' preference.

In short, quit claws-mail, open ~/.claws-mail/clawsrc in your text editor,
find two_line_vertical=1 and change it to two_line_vertical=0.
