Default for Gnome Desktop. I don't run in Wayland either but the old
X11. Wayland causes too many headaches with apps I use. From the Wiki
page:

GNOME Display Manager (GDM) is a display manager (a graphical login
manager) for the windowing systems X11 and Wayland.
