This sounds like it might be the known bug in libwebkit2gtk-4.x. Try this:

Open a shell (konsole, gnome-terminal, etc) and set

WEBKIT_FORCE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1

Then start claws-mail from the same shell. See if it fixes it.
