Doing ls -l .claws-mail gives the same results on both old and new
laptops, as far as I can tell.  What else can/should I look at?

No idea.  I get the error message when I right click on the little
rectangle on the right hand edge of the claws-mail window, and then
left click on "Open". A new Firefox window is opened, with the error
message displayed.
