I have unfilled them and tested, and to my great joy, the send worked.
So my problem seems to be solved. Thank you hugely!
I note however that on my old machine, those entries are filled in and
sending works anyway!
I think I will leave this as being a mystery and get on with life.

I don't know how that could have happened. I must have been messing
about somehow when I took the screenshot. When I edited the "send"
preferences just now, to remove those entries as suggested, the User ID
field was fine. Gremlins?
Be that as it may, sending seems to be working now.
