Now there's a thought!  😊️ When in doubt read the error messages. Doh!
So I did that, and the log said that gcc crashed because it could not
read the spec file "/usr/share/dpkg/no-pie-link.specs.

I looked at /usr/share/dpkg and there were four files, none of which was
no-pie-link.specs.

After more stuggle, I made use of "locate" found the file that was
sought in /snap/gnome-42-2204/176/usr/share/dpkg.

I tried to make a symbolic link so as to make the file available (in
/usr/share/dpkg, but failed.  I probably got the syntax wrong.  So
I just copied the file from the /snap/.... location into
/usr/share/dpkg.  The script ./autogen.sh then ran to completion.

I then successfully did "make" and "sudo make install" and got a working
instance of claws-mail.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my cry for help.

Unfortunately, my tale of woe does not end there.  But the new issue is
entirely different, so I'll talk about it in a new email.
