I am trying to build claws-mail on a new laptop running ubuntu 24.04.

I downloaded the tarball, unpacked it, cd-ed to claws-mail-4.3.0,
and then ran ./autogen.sh. After a lot of sudo apt-getting etc.,
to install missing bits of software, I got to a point where the output
said:

> checking for libetpan >= 0.57... no

But I had just installed libetpan via

    sudo apt install libetpan20

which is what seemed to be required, according to what I'd seen on
the web.

This seemed to work, although I got a message

> Note, selecting 'libetpan20t64' instead of 'libetpan20'

Nevertheles the foregoing complaint from autogen.sh appeared.

After a bit of pondering I did

    sudo apt install libetpan-dev

That seemed to run without problems.

But then ./autgen.sh complained:

> checking whether libetpan compiles and links fine... no

So it failed again, and I am out of ideas.

Can anyone tell me how to install a version of libetpan which *will*
``compile and link fine''? Or suggest some alternative procedure?

This is driving me mad!

sincerely,

Unk
