This can have nothing to do with the age of the mail.

Where are these messages, on an IMAP server?

Is that all messages, or just some?

Are these HTML messages? Are you automatically displaying the HTML message
part? What HTML rendering plugin do you use?

Run `claws-mail --debug` and share the debug output when this happens.

The above might start to give us a clue as to what is happening on your
computer.
