I am testing mit a bit now as well. I found in my case IMAP server
directory should be '[Gmail]'... and I moved directory related to my
gmail account from ~/.claws-mail/imapcache in order to force a fresh
content (I did several configuration attempts before and there was some
garbage).

I did not achieve exactly what I like to get, but I am close.
