Eventually one find it... i think google just delight in making things difficult this is where to go
https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?sjid=9570856314178558894-EU#app-passwords&zippy=%2Cforgot-your-app-password%2Cremove-app-passwords

So nice an easy to set up once you know how.

Thing that surprised me was one gets extra unused folders which i didn't get in Evolution or Thunderbird.
Inbox
Sent
Drafts
Queue
Trash
    Gmail
     All mail
     Bin
     Drafts
     Sent mail
     Spam
     Starred

I use an archive instead of Inbox so all mail is in 'All mail'.

My reason for choosing Claws was it is so much faster when installing mail for the first time after an install than Thunderbird. The new Thunderbird is not aesthetically pleasing to use.

I'm pleased to say all sorted... you can all rejoice in the hope that i have no more problems. Thanks for the help.
