Are you sure that "claws-mail" is the binary, and not a wrapping script
that is changing some env. settings ?
Can you run:
$ which claws-mail
$ ls -l `which claws-mail`
$ file `which claws-mail`
$ ldd `which claws-mail`
$ alias | grep claws

to be sure that "claws-mail" is the real claws-mail binary.
